Costume and Textiles Internships at LACMA (Los Angeles)

Costume and Textiles Department

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art invites internship applications for the Department of Costume and Textiles for the fall 2008 semester. Selected interns will assist the curatorial staff with handling, documenting, and researching objects while gaining greater knowledge and hands-on experience within a renowned encyclopedic collection of costume and textiles. The intern must commit to the completion of 240 hours of work throughout the semester for academic credit towards a bachelor's or master’s degree in art history, museum studies, or related field.

Qualifications:
Student currently enrolled in a bachelor or master’s level art history, museum studies, or related field program for an internship during the fall/winter 2008 semester. An academic concentration in costume and textiles is preferable.

The ideal candidate is organized and self-motivated with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work as a team player. This candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong working knowledge of MS Office. The ideal candidate must also be a strong researcher. Duties include organizing and documenting objects through the cataloging process, managing digital images for documentation, researching objects, handling objects and rare-books materials, preparing archival storage units, and other such assistance to the curatorial staff.

The American Textile History Museum Interns (Lowell, MA)

The American Textile History Museum offers unpaid internships in several departments. The Museum staff will work with a candidate to customize an internship or practicum that achieves the students goals while fitting the Museum's needs and capabilities. A list of intern opportunities is listed below.

ATHM is not able to provide stipends or housing for interns.

Museum Education Intern:
The Intern will assist with all aspects of the Museum’s educational program. This will include assisting teachers with school-age programs in the classroom, preparing program materials and spaces used for programs including set up and clean up and maintaining database of schools. Interns will also participate in Outreach events. Preference is given to undergraduate senior or graduate student in History, Art History, American Studies, Education, and/or experience in museums. Library Intern:
The Library serves as the focal point for researchers, students and others who seek information pertaining to textiles and textiles and the textiles industry. The Library Volunteer assists the Librarian with general library related projects including cataloging, moving and shelving books and research. Collections Intern:
The Collections Intern will support the work of the collections department through duties related to cataloguing and photographing objects. These will include research, object storage, and administrative tasks. The intern may also assist with exhibit related duties as needed.
Interns working in the Collections Department should have experience or skills in the following areas: historical research, ability to communicate in written documents, photography, scanning, and computer and database processing. Experience working with museum artifacts preferred. Interest in textiles and American history. Preference is given to graduate students in textile-related fields, history, and museum studies.
