POSITION PURPOSE:


















JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports to: Senior Designer/Senior Design Manager

Assigned a specific product classification within a Department to design while maintaining the responsibilities of Design Assistant. Begin to create and execute original design concepts to formulate seasonal concepts that are market right. Design products from concept through completion with a focus on function, quality and creativity. Train under Design Manager to develop skills necessary to successfully complete the design process. Continue to aide Manager in prior assistant role while simultaneously learning new designer role. Person must be able to manage competing demands and meet deadline for both positions. Uphold the highest standards of excellence in communication to establish and maintain strong relationships with both team members and all Pacific Sunwear business partners. Position reports to the Senior Design Manager if there is one in the area or a Designer.


Need to be strong team player with a willingness to try new approaches and openly embrace emerging technology.

Begins to contribute to seasonal trends, themes, colors and styling. Helps develop fabrics that are new, current and aesthetically appropriate for the brand, while adhering to production and costing requirements. Familiarizes themselves with the trim market in search of new developments and interesting details that help distinguish the product from the competition. Work with Design Manager to help direct Artists and Graphic Designers to create initial pattern concepts in prints, yarn dyes, and graphics. Responsible for following through handloom, strike off, lab dip approval, etc. Work with colorist to insure that color standards are established and approvals are coordinated among different fabrics, trims and product categories.

Assists Designer in executing design concepts within the time frame established by seasonal calendar. Associate is able to use the computer drawing tools proficiently for both Adobe Illustrator and Micrografx. Can design, recreate, manipulate and recolor prints using Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Streamline. Associate is able to design and maneuver comfortably using the computer with little or no assistance in doing so. All trims and design aesthetics must be logically worked out and appropriately explained in order to insure design integrity. Must help execute the concepts of the designer with critical attention to detail and a sense of urgency to meet all department deadlines.

Must produce a complete spec package for every garment designed, in a timely manner and in the designated format established by the technical design department. Associate is responsible to generate spec packages for his/her area as well as help establish those for the Design Manager. The tech packs must be thorough and completed by the due date each season. The Associate attends fittings to learn to comment and convey the intended fit of each garment. Spec packs are generated and maintained in PDM by the Assistant and/or Associate in each area.

Constantly evaluate the competition and a have an unwavering commitment to maintaining and improving brand positioning. Must diligently shop the stores, read trade magazines and keep abreast of issues, movies and events that affect creative trends. Must partner with the Design Manager and the merchant to understand and interpret current business trends in both our stores as well as the competition.

In addition to the performance of the job responsibilities, mentioned above, this
position might be required to perform supportive functions, with the percentage of time
performing each function to be solely determined by the supervisor based on the particular
requirements of the operation.

Requirements:

















Education/Experience:
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
o Adobe illustrator, Micrografx and Photoshop skills.
o PDM training preferred.
o Timely sense of trends and market direction encompassing color, fabric and silhouette.
o Working knowledge of garment construction, pattern making, textiles and current finishing techniques and processes.
o 3-5years design experience, which includes fabric sourcing, technical design, trim development and color training and practical experience.
o Computer PC, MAC and CAD experience.
o Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Four year Bachelor Degree preferred in either the Arts or Sciences.
