NYC- Saks Fifth Avenue (merchandising)

The student should be finished with their Junior year in college and interested in a career in fashion buying/merchandising. The ideal candidate will possess both analytic skills and a strong interest in fashion. The candidate must be detail oriented, organized, possess the ability to multi-task and more importantly, have a strong work ethic.

The intern will assist their respective buying team with informational/selling tools for the stores such as lookbooks, inspire pages, product knowledge packets and newsletters. They will aid the assistant buyers in the creation and maintenance of styles in the database, keying store transfers, keying in price adjustments, running selling every Monday mornings and compiling information for market prep folders. They will shop the competition and report their findings as it relates to product and display. In addition, they should regularly scan fashion/business related periodicals (WWD, Vogue, W Magazine, Bazaar, Times Magazine, etc.) and communicate their findings to the team. They will assist the buying team every Thursday morning in maintaining optimal merchandise presentation in the NY store.

The candidate will ultimately learn what it takes to be a successful merchant. They will obtain a working knowledge of retail math and its application in analyzing the business. Through their daily tasks, they will learn the implications of their actions and how it affects the business. Through compiling information for market prep, they will gain an understanding of the characteristics of top/slow performing styles. Through their market research and competitive shopping, they will learn how to stay abreast on the current fashion trends.
